Raw and Bessel-filtered opacity at 5 Hz on a log axis, so idle smoke at 0.3% and a snap peak at 30% both read clearly. The peak is marked the moment it lands.
Two gauges that matter
Dwell since the last release (5–45 s before the next snap) and the 2:00 official window counting down — the three official snaps have to fit inside it or the set repeats. The Snap button stays dark until dwell is satisfied.
Preliminary and official, kept apart
Three preliminary snaps are recorded but never averaged. Each official snap shows its corrected value and its peak; the corrected average appears only when the third one lands.
Nothing to key in
Readings, timing, and the pass/fail decision are the smoke meter's. The operator's controls are Snap, hold-to-stop, and abort vehicle.

One visit, start to finish

Every field CTC-VIS requires is captured in order and checked before you can move on. Nothing is transcribed later.

  1. Intake. Scan the VIN with the phone camera. Known customers and vehicles fill in from the last test; new ones are typed once. One authorization and on-screen signature covers the visit.
  2. Engine and test type. Engine model year and ECL are confirmed on one screen. Opacity, OBD, or visual-only routes what comes next; the state profile sets the cut-point.
  3. Snap. Snap the smoke meter onto the stack. Three preliminary and three official snaps per J1667, with dwell, the 2-minute window, and the corrected average handled by the instrument.
  4. Visual inspection. The seven-category checklist is completed on the phone, with the OBD result captured alongside it when that test applies.
  5. Submit. At checkout the smoke meter builds the CTC-VIS record and sends it. If the network is down, it queues and retries every 30 minutes until CARB accepts it.
  6. Checkout. The vehicle inspection report carries CARB's confirmation number. Hand it over however the customer wants it: printed, emailed, or texted to their phone.
  7. Next vehicle. A batch of up to ~30 trucks runs in any order; review, attest, and sign the whole batch once at the end instead of after each truck.

Plugs into the truck's diagnostic port, draws its power from the vehicle, and streams to the Field Analyzer over Bluetooth. Listen-only on the bus: it never transmits to the truck.
